Oklahoma weed tax, line by line

Straight answer

About 15.6% in Oklahoma City. Every sale carries the 7% medical marijuana tax, then the regular 4.5% state rate plus the city and county share. That part isn't charged on the 7% when the receipt lists it separately, so a $50 eighth rings up at $57.81 in OKC.

Two taxes, one receipt

This page of our Oklahoma dispensary guide breaks the receipt into its parts. Both taxes are figured on the price you pay.

  • The 7% tax. On every retail sale, figured on what the store takes in and collected at the register.
  • Sales tax. The same rate as anything else you buy there, 4.5% state plus the county and city. It isn't charged on the 7% when the receipt shows the 7% on its own line.
  • Deals. Under the state's sales tax rules, store discounts and coupons nobody reimburses aren't part of the taxed price.

The Tax Commission's own example is a $100 purchase, $7.00 of the 7% and $8.50 of sales tax at an 8.5% rate, $115.50 in all. Pipes, papers and batteries usually carry only sales tax.

Run your order

Put in the shelf price, pick a city and a deal. Store discounts come off before tax, and sales tax is figured on the price, never on the 7%.

A $50 eighth around the state

Same shelf price, the main county part of each city. The 7% never changes, so the gap is the city and county share. OKC's rate runs 8.75% in its Cleveland County part, 8.975% in Canadian County and 10.12% in Pottawatomie County.

Where it goes, and who pays less

  • Where the 7% goes. Into the Medical Marijuana Tax Fund, which the Legislature spends on substance abuse programs and schools, Redbud school grants included. The Tax Commission keeps 1.5% for collecting it.
  • The regulator. OMMA runs on license fees and fines, not on the 7%.
  • Veterans. 100% disabled veterans with the Tax Commission's exemption card skip sales tax but still pay the 7%.
  • Cash rounding. Some stores round cash totals to the nickel now that pennies are gone. The tax is figured before the rounding, so it doesn't change.

The 7% brought in $45.3 million in 2025, down from $66.2 million in 2021, and $32.0 million from January to September 2026. There's no lower patient rate, since every buyer here holds a medical card.
