Why your credit card gets declined
Every page in our Oklahoma dispensary guide lands on the same split. Oklahoma made medical cannabis legal, and banks answer to Washington. Nothing in the statutes or the regulator's rules picks a payment method, so it's up to each store and its bank.
The April 28, 2026 federal move put state-licensed medical marijuana in Schedule III, and the regulator says details on banking will come later. Until then the cashless ATM is the common fix. The store runs your debit like an ATM withdrawal, rounds up and hands back the difference, and it costs a couple of dollars.
Will this work at the register?
Tap how you want to pay. No state rule picks a payment method, so this is store practice. Call ahead if you're counting on one.
WorksCash
Works at basically every store. Some round cash totals to the nickel now that pennies are gone.
WorksDebit
Works at most stores, usually as a cashless ATM charge that rounds up and hands back change, plus a small fee.
WorksIn-store ATM
Common. Expect an ATM fee on top of anything your own bank charges, so pull enough the first time.
SometimesCredit card
Don't count on it. No state rule bans credit, but the big payment networks still avoid most cannabis sales.
Won't workApple Pay, Google Pay
Usually not. Phone wallets ride the same payment networks, so the same problem applies.
SometimesCash App or prepaid
Sometimes. It works where the store runs debit, usually as a cashless ATM charge.
WorksExact change
Fine. A store may round a cash total to the nearest nickel, and the tax you owe is figured before the rounding.
