Where it goes, and how to pay less
- Use the store's own deals. A store discount or store coupon lowers the price both taxes are figured on. A manufacturer's coupon or rebate doesn't.
- Fees count. Any fee tied to the sale is part of the taxed price.
- Accessories skip the excise. Pipes and papers pay sales tax only, and cannabis is left out of the sales tax holiday.
- Where it goes. 64% of the excise goes to the state's general fund and 36% to the cities and townships that host a store, paid monthly since 2026.
The first version of Senate Bill 56 proposed a 15% excise, and the law that took effect kept 10%. The state's average price was $6.55 a gram of flower in early October 2026, before tax. If you buy often, a Ohio medical card cuts the excise entirely, and the same $50 eighth in Columbus comes to $54.00 with sales tax alone.
