Do Ohio dispensaries take credit cards?

Straight answer

Rarely, so plan on cash or debit. No Ohio rule picks a payment method, but cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so the big card networks stay out of most stores. Most take cash and debit, often as a "cashless ATM" charge. Defective, mislabeled or wrong items come back for 30 days with a refund on the spot.

Why your credit card gets declined

Every page in our Ohio dispensary guide comes back to one fact. Ohio made cannabis legal, Washington didn't. Nothing in the state's rules picks a payment method, but banks and payment networks answer to federal law, so most won't touch a cannabis sale.

The cashless ATM is the common fix. The store runs your debit like an ATM withdrawal, rounds up, and hands back the difference. It works, it just costs a couple of dollars. Tipping is up to you, since no rule covers it.

What the receipt has to show

Every adult-use sale comes with a receipt that lists the store's name and license number, the date and time, each item, any discount, and the sales tax and the 10% excise on separate lines.

  • Store deals cut the tax. A discount or store coupon taken at the register lowers the taxed price.
  • Manufacturer coupons don't. When the brand pays the store back, the full price stays taxable.
  • Patients get every deal. Any discount offered to adult-use shoppers has to be offered to registered patients too. The Ohio weed tax receipt shows the math.

Your 30-day return rights

Since November 3, 2025, every store has to take back defective, mislabeled or wrong items for at least 30 days from the purchase, and refund you at the time of the return. It can't send you to the processor for your money.

  • Posted policy. The return policy has to be on the store's website and on the receipt or at the register.
  • Longer is fine. A store can give you more than 30 days, never less.
  • Pickup orders. Prepaying online is allowed, and how pickup works is in Ohio weed delivery and pickup.

Most aren't strictly cash only. Debit, usually run as a cashless ATM charge, works at most stores, and many have an ATM inside.

Can you return a bad vape cart in Ohio?

Yes. Stores have to take back defective, mislabeled or wrong items for at least 30 days and refund you on the spot.

Do patients get the same deals as rec shoppers?
