Buying weed in Ohio from out of state

Straight answer

Yes. Anyone 21+ with a current photo ID can buy here at the same daily limit as locals, and other states' medical cards don't count. The catch runs both ways. Cannabis bought in another state is illegal to have here since March 20, 2026, and nothing bought here can cross the line.

Buying as a visitor

Visitors shop the same 231 licensed stores as locals, and this page of our Ohio dispensary guide covers what changes for you. Mostly, nothing does. The law defines an adult-use buyer by age alone, with no residency rule, so you get the full daily limit.

Bring a current government photo ID. Medical cards from other states count only under a reciprocity agreement, and we haven't found one, so visiting patients shop adult-use and pay the 10% excise. The caps are in our Ohio purchase limits tool.

The Michigan run is over

For years, Ohioans drove north to buy. Since March 20, 2026, only cannabis bought at a licensed Ohio dispensary or grown at home is legal to have here, so a Michigan haul is contraband the moment it crosses. Driving with it is a separate minor misdemeanor.

Michigan lets adults carry 2.5 ounces, but that ends at its border, and crossing any state line with cannabis breaks federal law. Kentucky's medical program honors other states' medical cards with proof of a qualifying condition, but an Ohio adult-use buy gets no cover there. Using it here is covered in where you can smoke weed in Ohio.

Airports, mail and the federal line

TSA doesn't search for drugs, but it hands any illegal drug it finds to police. Its medical marijuana page now reads "Yes (Special Instructions)" without giving any, and that's no permission slip. Cincinnati's airport, CVG, is across the river in Kentucky.

An April 28, 2026 rule moved state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III. Adult-use stayed Schedule I, and nothing in it makes carrying cannabis between states legal. Mailing it is a federal crime. How every other state treats visitors is in our can tourists buy weed guide.
