Checked three times
IDs get checked before you reach the sales floor, again at the register, and again when you take an order. This page of our Ohio dispensary guide covers what to bring. Nobody under 21 can come inside unless they're a registered medical patient.
For an online order, the name on the ID has to match the order. Medical stores confirm the buyer is a patient 18 or older or a caregiver 21 or older.
Will my ID work?
Tap what's in your wallet. The rule asks for a current government photo ID with a birth date and names no list, so stores can be stricter.
AcceptedOhio license or state ID
Good everywhere, as long as it's current and you're 21.
AcceptedOut-of-state license
Fits the rule. It asks for a current government photo ID with a birth date and doesn't limit it to one state.
AcceptedUS passport
Fits the rule. A current passport is a government photo ID showing a birth date.
Ask firstMilitary ID
Ask first. A current military ID with a birth date fits the wording, but each store sets its own check.
Ask firstForeign passport
Ask first. The rule says government-issued and doesn't name a country. Call the store before you go.
Turned awayExpired license
Turned away. The law calls for a current, valid ID, so an expired one fails.
Turned awayFake or borrowed ID
Turned away, and using one is a first-degree misdemeanor with a $250 to $1,000 fine.
Ask first18 to 20 with a patient ID
Yes as a registered patient, with your patient ID and a photo ID. Adult-use shopping waits until 21.
Ask firstPatient under 18
Only with a registered caregiver along. Patients under 18 can't use vapes.
Turned awayTurning 21 next week
Turned away. Adult-use sales start on your 21st birthday, not a day before.
