Missouri weed tax, line by line

Straight answer

About 18% in Kansas City and St. Louis. Every adult-use sale carries the 6% state marijuana tax, most cities add 3% of their own, and regular sales tax comes on top. A $50 eighth rings up at $58.99 in Kansas City. Patients pay 4% instead.

Three taxes, one receipt

This page of our Missouri dispensary guide breaks the receipt into its parts. Each tax is a share of the retail price.

  • State marijuana tax. 6% on every adult-use sale.
  • Local marijuana tax. Up to 3%, only where local voters approved it. Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia charge it, and Chesterfield doesn't.
  • Regular sales tax. The same state and local rate as anything else you buy there. The marijuana taxes don't replace it.

The Department of Revenue's rate table lists a separate adult-use marijuana rate for every city and county, and that's the rate stores collect.

Pipes, papers and merch at a dispensary pay regular sales tax only.

Put in the shelf price, pick a city and a deal. Stores usually figure tax on the price after their own discount, though we haven't found a state rule that says so.

A $50 eighth around Missouri

Same shelf price, base city rates. The state tax never changes, so the gap is sales tax and the local marijuana tax. Kansas City spans four counties, so its Clay and Platte County parts run 17.725% and the Cass County part 18.1%.

Stores inside a special taxing district charge more. Many Branson addresses sit in one, and a Kansas City district row runs a point higher. A patient buying the same eighth in Kansas City pays $56.49, and St. Louis put its 3% to voters under Ordinance 71608.

Where it goes, and how to pay less

  • Where the 6% goes. After the state's costs and expungements, it's split three ways, veterans' health care, addiction treatment and the public defender system.
  • New local taxes. A city's tax starts on the first day of the second quarter after it notifies the Department of Revenue.
  • Patients pay less. 4% plus sales tax, with no state 6% and no local marijuana tax. Show the patient card and a photo ID at the counter.

Missouri stores sold about $1.51 billion in 2025, medical and adult-use together. If you buy often, a Missouri medical card cuts 5 points off the tax in most big cities.
