- Know exactly which sources ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite for dispensaries
- Understand why AI names one store and skips the one next door
- Leave with a fix list for each tool, in order
When someone asks an AI tool for a dispensary, it does not look up a ranking. It reads a handful of pages about your city, finds the stores those pages agree on, and writes a short list. Your job is to be the store the sources agree on.
The clearest example came from Denver. ChatGPT's first pick there was named because a local paper's 2026 Readers' Choice awards called it the best dispensary in town. Its second pick was there because Weedmaps showed a 4.9 rating from 469 reviews. One award, one strong review profile. That is the whole mechanism in two lines.
What each tool cited in 50 cities
Share of answers that linked to at least one source of each type. A dispensary website means any licensed store's own site.
| Source type | ChatGPT | Gemini | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best-of list sites | 84% | 90% | 70% |
| Weedmaps and Leafly | 68% | 72% | 80% |
| Dispensary websites | 12% | 92% | 94% |
| Yelp and review sites | 34% | 4% | 52% |
| News and local media | 8% | 38% | 38% |
| 2% | 54% | 4% | |
| Stores named per answer | 2.9 | 6.7 | 3.0 |
Three very different readers. ChatGPT goes to lists and directories and almost never to a store's own site. Gemini and Perplexity read store websites in nearly every answer. Gemini also listens to Reddit and local media. Perplexity leans on Yelp, which licenses its data to Perplexity.
ChatGPT: win the lists and the listings
ChatGPT named about three stores per city. It cited a dispensary's own website in only 6 of 50 answers. It built its picks from "best dispensaries in" pages, Weedmaps and Leafly, Yelp, and local award lists.
Yelp matters more for ChatGPT every month. In July 2026, Axios reported that Yelp is licensing its reviews, photos and business details to OpenAI, with Yelp's branding showing inside ChatGPT answers. Yelp allows cannabis businesses in states where cannabis is legal. If your Yelp page is unclaimed, stale or thin on reviews, that is now what ChatGPT reads about you.
Fix list for ChatGPT, in order:
- Get onto the best-of lists for your city, starting with the ones ChatGPT already cites there. Lesson 7.
- Complete Weedmaps and Leafly: hours, photos, menu, deals, and a steady flow of reviews. Lesson 4.
- Claim Yelp, fix every fact, add real photos. Do not ask customers for Yelp reviews directly; Yelp's rules discourage it. Let your other review requests do the work. Lesson 5.
- Make sure your site does not block OAI-SearchBot. Lesson 6.
Gemini: your website and the local conversation
Gemini wrote the longest lists, about 6.7 stores per answer, and linked to a dispensary's own website in 46 of 50 answers. It also cited Reddit in more than half and local media in more than a third.
That makes Gemini the most winnable of the three. If your site clearly says who you are, where you are and what you are known for, Gemini will read it. If people in your city talk about you on Reddit or a local paper writes you up, Gemini picks that up too.
Fix list for Gemini: a website with real, specific pages (lesson 6), honest presence in local Reddit conversations (lesson 7), and local press and best-of coverage (lesson 7).
Perplexity: be the store with the clearest facts
Perplexity cited dispensary websites in 47 of 50 answers, Weedmaps or Leafly in 80%, and Yelp in more than half. It also pulled Apple Maps and MapQuest more than the others. Its answers read like a fact sheet: name, street address, what the store is known for, a line from reviews.
Fix list for Perplexity: the same facts on your website, Weedmaps, Leafly, Yelp and Apple Maps (lesson 4), and a site that states your address, hours, specialties and license plainly in text (lesson 6).
Why AI names one store and skips the next
Across all four tools, only 24% of the 2,407 licensed stores in our 50 cities were named at all. The named stores shared a pattern:
- More than one source agrees on them. A best-of list plus a strong Weedmaps or Yelp rating plus their own site saying the same thing.
- They have a website. Stores with a website on file were named 29% of the time. Stores without one: 13%. More than double.
- There is a reason to pick them. An award, a specialty, a review count, a neighborhood. AI repeats the reason it was given. "Best for first-timers." "Known for live rosin." "Open late." If no source gives a reason, the AI has nothing to write.
Stores with a website were named by AI more than twice as often as stores without one, 29% against 13%.
2,407 licensed stores in 50 cities, October 2026. A website is not the only cause, but it is the cheapest one to fix.Big cities are the hardest. In Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Los Angeles and New York, about 1 in 10 licensed stores got named, or fewer. There are simply too many stores for a three-name answer. In those cities, the reason to pick you has to be specific: a neighborhood, a specialty, a late-night window.
Give AI a reason to say your name
Pick the one or two things you want AI to say about you, then make sure every source says them. Your website headline, your Weedmaps description, your Yelp page, your review replies, the pitch you send to a local writer. When five sources say "the late-night store in Midtown with the big edibles wall," that is what the answer says.
If the answer is vague or wrong, your sources are vague or wrong. That is the gap to close.
Common questions
Will ChatGPT refuse to recommend a dispensary?
Usually not for a plain local question. In our 50-city test, ChatGPT named at least one licensed store in 48 of 50 answers, often with a reminder about age and ID. Other research found AI tools hedge more on cannabis prompts in general, so keep your own pages factual and compliant, which also makes them easier to quote.
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my store?
No. There is no paid placement inside ChatGPT's local answers. What you can influence is the set of sources it reads: best-of lists, listings, reviews and your own website.
Why does Gemini name more stores than ChatGPT?
In our test Gemini named about 6.7 stores per answer against about 3 for ChatGPT and Perplexity. Gemini tends to write longer lists, so it is the easiest of the three to get into and the least valuable spot to be in. ChatGPT's short list is the prize.
Does blocking AI crawlers hurt my chances?
Blocking the search crawlers does. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot decides whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search answers. You can block the training crawlers separately without losing that. Lesson 6 has a ready robots.txt.
