Lesson 4 of 7

The dispensary listings AI trusts

AI tools double-check your store against the listings they trust. When those listings agree, you get named with confidence. When they disagree, you get skipped or described wrong. Here is the short list, and how to keep it clean.

AI answers about the best dispensary in a city linked to Weedmaps. Leafly was close behind at 87. No other site came near them.

ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, 50 cities, October 2026.

When an AI tool writes "open until 10, on Main Street, known for its deals," it is copying facts from somewhere. Usually from three or four listings it trusts, checked against each other. If Weedmaps says you close at 9, Google says 10 and Yelp still shows your old address, the AI has two choices: pick one and risk being wrong, or leave you out. It often leaves you out.

The listings that showed up most

Across all 200 answers in our study, these listing sites were cited most. Share of answers that linked to each:

Google Maps looks low here because Google's own tools show map cards rather than linking out. Inside Google AI Mode, Google Maps cards appeared in 60% of answers. Treat your Google profile as the most important listing you have, then Weedmaps and Leafly, then Yelp.

The one rule: same facts, one listing each

Forget matching every comma. Search engines know that "St" and "Street" are the same. What breaks trust is facts that disagree or duplicate listings:

  • Stale facts. An old address after a move, an old phone number, last year's hours, a closed second location still showing open.
  • Name drift. "Green Leaf," "Green Leaf Dispensary," and "Green Leaf Cannabis Co. LLC" can look like three stores. Pick the name on your storefront and use it everywhere.
  • Duplicates. Two Yelp pages or two Google listings for the same store split your reviews in half and confuse every AI that reads them. Merge or remove the extra one.
Write it once

Before you touch a single listing, write your master facts in one place: the exact name, address, phone, website, hours for every day including holidays, your license number, and your one-line reason from lesson 3. Copy from that sheet every time. The generator in lesson 6 builds it for you.

Weedmaps and Leafly: the two AI reads most

These two are where AI goes to confirm you exist, see your rating and grab a detail to repeat. Fill every field:

  • Hours that match Google exactly, including holidays.
  • A live menu, synced from your point of sale, so stock and prices are current.
  • Real photos: storefront, counter, products, staff. Not stock.
  • A description that says your one-line reason in plain words. "Late-night store near the stadium with the biggest edibles selection in the neighborhood" beats "premium cannabis experience."
  • Deals that are actually live. Expired deals look like an abandoned page.
  • A steady flow of reviews, with replies. Lesson 5.

Yelp: now inside ChatGPT

Yelp was cited in a third of ChatGPT's answers and more than half of Perplexity's. In July 2026 Axios reported that Yelp is licensing its reviews, photos and business details to OpenAI for ChatGPT. Perplexity already licenses Yelp data. Claim your Yelp page, fix every fact, add photos and write a real description. One caution: Yelp's rules discourage businesses from asking for reviews on Yelp directly. Let customers find Yelp on their own.

The maps behind the maps

Phones, cars and voice assistants pull from a few map databases. Your listing in each one feeds dozens of apps you will never touch directly.

  • Apple Maps. Siri and Apple Maps answers come from your Apple place card. Apple Business Connect lets you manage it. If your listing cannot be claimed, use "Report an Issue" in Apple Maps to correct the facts.
  • Bing Places. Feeds Bing, Copilot and other tools that use Bing's index.
  • Foursquare, TomTom and HERE. Navigation data used by car systems and many apps. Some reports say AI tools use Foursquare for local data; others dispute it. Claiming takes minutes either way.

The best-of directories in your city

A newer group of sites shows up constantly in AI answers: "best dispensaries in" directories. In our study, ChatGPT and Gemini cited one in most answers. You cannot control their rankings, but you can make sure you are listed, your facts are right, and your page is claimed where claiming is offered. Look at the ones that appeared in your lesson 1 test first. Lesson 7 covers getting onto the lists themselves.

Your state's license list

State regulators publish lists of licensed dispensaries, and AI tools do read them. State cannabis and health department sites appeared as sources in several answers in our study. Check that your store name and address on the state list match everything else. If they do not, ask your regulator how to update it.

Common questions

Do my address and phone need to match character for character everywhere?

No. Search engines treat St and Street, or a phone number with or without +1, as the same thing. What hurts is stale facts: an old address after a move, a dead phone number, a name variation, or a second listing for the same store that splits your reviews.

Should I pay for a listing management service that pushes to hundreds of sites?

Usually not. The listings that matter for dispensaries are about a dozen, plus the best-of sites that show up in your city. Past about 20, extra directories add little. Doing the dozen by hand and keeping them current beats a mass push.

Is Weedmaps still worth it if its traffic is falling?

As a source AI reads, yes. Weedmaps and Leafly were the two most-cited sites in our 200 AI answers. Even if fewer people browse them directly, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity use them to decide who to name.

Can a dispensary list on Yelp?

Yes, in states where cannabis is legal for adult or medical use, Yelp has said it allows cannabis businesses. Claim the page, fix the facts and add real photos.
