Four steps to a card
The state runs one of the easier medical programs in the Midwest, and this part of our Illinois dispensary guide walks it start to finish.
- Get a written certification from an Illinois certifying health care professional (exam may be by telemedicine)
- Register online through the IDPH Medical Cannabis Patient Program portal
- Pay $50 for a 1-year card ($100 for 2 years, $125 for 3 years)
- Print or download your card from your online account
Once you apply with your certification, you get a provisional registration and can shop for 90 days while IDPH reviews it. You need an Illinois address and one of the 58 conditions on the state's list, which includes chronic pain, PTSD and migraines.
A reduced fee of $25, $50 or $75 covers veterans, people 65 and up, people on SSI, SSDI, SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, TANF or LIHEAP, and people experiencing homelessness.
Does a card pay for itself?
Slide to what you spend in a month. The math compares Chicago's 26.5% adult-use tax on flower with the 2.5% patients pay there.
Adult-use rate shown is flower at or under 35% THC bought in Chicago. Vapes, concentrates and edibles carry a higher excise, so patients save even more on those. Certifying visit fees aren't included, and they vary.
