Minnesota weed tax, line by line

Straight answer

About 24% in Minneapolis. Every sale carries a 15% cannabis tax, up from 10% since July 1, 2025, plus the 6.875% state sales tax and any local add-on. A $50 eighth rings up at $62.01 in Minneapolis and $62.44 in Saint Paul. Enrolled medical patients pay none of it.

Three taxes, one receipt

This page of our Minnesota dispensary guide breaks the receipt into its parts. Both kinds of tax are figured on the shelf price, never tax on tax.

  • Cannabis tax. 15% of the price, on flower, edibles, vapes and hemp THC products alike. It was 10% until June 30, 2025.
  • State sales tax. 6.875%, the same as on anything else you buy.
  • City and county tax. Whatever they add. Saint Paul's comes to 3%, Minneapolis's to 2.15%.

Pipes, vape hardware, seeds, live plants and grow supplies only pay sales tax, not the cannabis tax. Hemp THC drinks from a liquor store or bar carry the full stack, same as a dispensary edible.

Run your order

Put in the shelf price, pick a city and a deal. A store's own discount lowers the price the tax is figured on.

A $50 eighth, city by city

Same shelf price, different city. The cannabis tax never changes, so the gap is all local tax.

In a town with no local add-on, the floor is 21.875%, or $60.94 for the same eighth. Albert Lea's city tax ended September 30, 2026, so it's down to 7.375% before the cannabis tax.

Ways to pay less

  • Use the store's own deals. A store coupon lowers the price both taxes are figured on. A manufacturer's coupon the store gets paid back for doesn't.
  • Watch delivery fees. Delivery charges are taxed too, and some orders also carry the state's 50-cent retail delivery fee.
  • Tribal stores. Sales on Tribal land by Tribe-licensed sellers skip the state cannabis and sales taxes.

24.025%. That's the 15% cannabis tax plus 9.025% in state and local sales tax, so a $50 eighth comes to $62.01.

Did Minnesota raise its cannabis tax?

Yes. The cannabis tax went from 10% to 15% on sales after June 30, 2025.

Yes. Hemp edibles and drinks from liquor stores, bars and hemp shops pay the 15% cannabis tax plus sales tax.

A store's own coupon does, since it lowers the taxed price. A manufacturer's coupon the store gets reimbursed for doesn't.

Not for enrolled Minnesota patients, who skip both the cannabis tax and sales tax. Visiting patients from other states pay them.
