What happens at the door
Staff check your age before a sale even starts, and this page of our Minnesota dispensary guide covers what to bring. Every entrance to the sales floor has to post a "No persons under 21 allowed" sign.
Stores can't sell to anyone who's visibly intoxicated. For an order placed ahead, staff match the name on the order to your ID at pickup, so the person who ordered is the one who picks up.
Will my ID work?
Tap what's in your wallet. The law spells out the only IDs a store can take, and the list is shorter than people expect.
AcceptedMinnesota license or ID
Good everywhere, as long as it's valid and you're 21.
AcceptedOut-of-state license
Works. Visitors get the same limit as locals here.
AcceptedCanadian license
Yes. A license or ID card from a Canadian province with your photo and birth date counts.
AcceptedUS passport
Yes. A valid US passport is on the list.
AcceptedForeign passport
Yes, for foreign nationals, as long as it's valid.
AcceptedTribal ID
Yes, if it's unexpired and shows your legal name, birth date, signature and photo.
Turned awayMilitary ID
Turned away. The law names the only IDs a store can take, and military IDs aren't one of them.
Ask firstExpired license
Expect a no. The law calls for a valid ID, so an expired one will likely be refused.
Turned awayFake or borrowed ID
Turned away, and the store can keep it. It has to hand a seized ID to police within 24 hours.
Ask firstUnder 21 and enrolled
Patients and caregivers under 21 can come in and buy medical products, but not flower, and since May 27, 2026, not vapes.
