The leaderboard
There are two ways to count dispensaries, and they crown different winners. Count every licensed store and the big ones win, because more people means more shops. Count stores for every 100,000 people and you find where a dispensary is actually around the corner.
Flip between the two. Same 37 places, totally different order.
California dispensaries top the count at 1,294, then Oklahoma (1,080) and Michigan (838). MED marks places where stores sell to medical patients only.
Per person, the map flips
California has the most stores, but it also has more than 39 million people. Spread across that many people, it works out to 3.3 dispensaries per 100,000 people. That ranks #17 of 37 per person.

Maine
The small states run this list. Montana dispensaries number 515 for about 1.1 million people, the densest spread in the country. Oklahoma and Maine follow. In places like that, the question isn't whether there's a spot nearby. It's which one.
