Field Guide 05 · Road trip

The closest legal dispensary from every no-weed state

Straight answer

It depends where you start. From Wisconsin, a licensed spot any adult 21+ can walk into is about 2 miles away. From South Carolina, the closest is about 67 miles. Pick your state and city below. One rule for the trip: buy it there, use it there. Bringing it home is a crime in your state and under federal law.

The drive home

Cannabis is still a federally controlled substance, so carrying it across any state line is a federal crime, even between two legal states. A state license, a store receipt or a medical card doesn't change that. The moment you drive back into a no-weed state, that state's possession law applies too.

Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 844

Your home state's law doesn't pause while you're gone. Here's what possession means back home:

Possession law, state by state
  • Idaho: Up to 3 oz is a misdemeanor with a mandatory minimum $300 fine for adults and up to 1 year in jail; more than 3 oz is a felony with up to 5 years in prison.
  • Indiana: Any amount is a Class B misdemeanor, raised to a Class A misdemeanor with a prior drug conviction and to a Level 6 felony with a prior conviction plus 30 g or more.
  • Kansas: Any amount is a crime: a first offense is a class B misdemeanor, a second is a class A misdemeanor, and a third is a felony.
  • Nebraska: Up to 1 oz is a civil infraction with a $300 fine for a first offense, more than 1 oz up to 1 lb is a misdemeanor, and more than 1 lb is a felony (the 2024 law protects qualified patients with a practitioner's written recommendation for up to 5 oz).
  • North Carolina: Up to 1/2 oz is a Class 3 misdemeanor, more than 1/2 oz up to 1.5 oz is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and more than 1.5 oz is a felony.
  • South Carolina: A first offense for up to 1 oz is a misdemeanor with up to 30 days in jail or a $100 to $200 fine, and a second offense can bring up to a year.
  • Tennessee: Possessing any amount is a Class A misdemeanor that can bring close to a year in jail, and amounts over 1/2 oz can be charged as a felony if prosecutors allege intent to sell.
  • Texas: Up to 2 oz is a Class B misdemeanor, more than 2 oz up to 4 oz is a Class A misdemeanor, and more than 4 oz is a felony.
  • Wisconsin: A first offense for any amount can bring up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine, and a second offense is a felony.
  • Wyoming: Up to 3 oz of plant marijuana is a misdemeanor (up to 12 months and $1,000), but more than 3 oz, or more than 0.3 g of a liquid form, is a felony with up to 5 years.
  • ✓Use it where it's legal. A licensed lounge where they exist, or a private place where the owner allows it.
  • ✓Line up a sober driver. Driving high is a DUI in every state, legal or not.
  • ✕Don't pack it for the ride back. Buy only what you'll use on the trip. Whatever's left stays behind.
  • ✕Don't mail or ship it. That's a federal crime too.

Medical-only neighbors don't count

Some states next door sell to patients only. Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia and the Dakotas have plenty of licensed stores, but without a patient card from that state (or one it accepts) you can't buy there. That's why this guide only counts stores that sell to any adult 21+.

Not sure which kind of store you're looking at? Here's recreational vs. medical dispensary, explained. Most adult-use stores sell to visitors 21+ with a valid ID from home. The state-by-state rules are in can tourists buy weed.

How we measured

  • From: the center of each city.
  • To: the street address of every licensed store on Alexis 420 that holds an adult-use license, in a state where adult-use sales are open.
  • Miles: straight-line distance. Driving is longer, usually by a fifth or more.
  • Not on the list yet: Washington, New Mexico and Alaska also license adult-use stores. Where a Washington or New Mexico town, or the Cherokee tribal store in North Carolina, is closer, the result says so.

Every store here comes from its state's official license list. Here's where the list comes from.

Quick answers
