Weed delivery in California, the legal way

Straight answer

Yes, from licensed stores, statewide. The driver has to be the store's own employee, 21 or older, who checks your ID and has you sign. Apps can take the order but can't deliver it, so gig couriers are out. Deliveries run 6 AM to 10 PM and nothing later.

How delivery works

Licensed stores take orders online or in an app and send their own drivers. This page of our California dispensary guide covers what happens between the order and the door.

  • Order. Every product listed on an ordering app has to show the store's legal name and license number.
  • An unmarked car. Nothing on the outside shows it carries cannabis.
  • In person, to you. The driver checks your ID, you sign, and you get a copy of the receipt. Keep the order on hand, police can ask for it.
  • Fees. Those get the excise and sales tax too, at the sales tax rate for your address. Ways to pay are in paying at California dispensaries.

How to spot an unlicensed delivery

Look online in LA and you'll find Instagram pages, Telegram menus and sites built to look official. You can ask any licensed driver to show the store's license, its QR code certificate and their employee badge, and a real one has all three.

Unlicensed sellers face citations up to $30,000 per violation plus criminal charges. You can report one anonymously to the Department of Cannabis Control, and Los Angeles publishes its own list of licensed delivery businesses. Every store on Alexis 420 comes from the state's license list.

Towns without stores, and curbside

Most of the state has no storefront at all, since 302 of California's 540 cities and counties allow no cannabis retail. Drivers fill that gap. Since January 1, 2024, no city or county can ban medical delivery, and cities can't stop licensed drivers from using public roads.

Curbside pickup works at storefronts, with the ID check at your car. Shops without a storefront can't do curbside, and drive-throughs are banned. The state-by-state list is in our which states allow weed delivery guide.

Yes, at storefronts. Staff bring the paid order out to the car and check ID there.
