Field Guide 10 · ID check

How old do you have to be to go to a dispensary?

Straight answer

21. Every recreational dispensary needs a valid, unexpired government photo ID showing you're 21 or older, and it's checked at the door. On the medical side, registered patients can shop younger: 18 in most programs (34 of 37), 19 in a couple and 21 in Utah. Under 18, only through a parent or guardian as caregiver.

IDs that work, and don't

  • ✓Driver's license or state ID. Valid and unexpired, from any US state. Works at every licensed counter.
  • ?US passport or passport card. Named in the rules of Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada and New York. Elsewhere it's a valid government photo ID, so it usually works.
  • ?Passport from another country. Named in California, Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota and New York.
  • ?US military ID. Named in California, Colorado, Maryland, Nevada and New York. Minnesota's list leaves it off.
  • ?Canadian driver's license. Named in Arizona, Minnesota and New York.
  • ?Digital ID on your phone. Only a state's official mobile ID, and only where it's accepted (Colorado, Montana). A photo or screenshot never works.
  • ✕Expired ID. Turned away. Nevada alone takes a state ID expired under 2 years, and only with a second ID.
  • ✕Photo of your ID. Not an ID. Stores scan the real card.
  • ✕School or work ID. Not a government ID. Maryland's rule calls this out by name.

Under 21?

Door rules

  • ✓Expect two checks. Colorado, Massachusetts and Vermont require an ID check at the door and again at the register. Most shops do both everywhere.
  • ✓Expect a scan. Many stores scan IDs to confirm they're real. Illinois requires it.
  • ✓You can shop on your 21st birthday. The day your ID says you're 21, you're 21.
  • ✕No fake IDs. Using one is a crime, and licensed stores train for it.
  • ✕No buying for someone under 21. Handing cannabis to a minor is a crime in every legal state.
